Lots of $4M Love for the Maulers Cut List

Wow, all three of those guys (Dempster, V. Wells and Vlad) went this round.

Still feeling good about the cuts though, I kind'a doubt that even at these $4M each salaries any one of them is even worth a #4... maybe V. Wells, but that's a lot of salary to hold out on a guy just for those precious few starts vs LHP and is a pretty big question mark to sign.

Yes, but wouldn't Dempster be well worth $900 K for you?

It's a good point, except - when I simmed having Dempster's 200IP on my team versus the mix of SP I have, I was always much worse with Dempster. I think he punishes a team every time he takes the mound. At least one that doesn't have the offensive output to offset the 5+ runs he gives up out there.

So, that was carefully considered, but actually 'no' - not worth the $900K.

I feel like he'd almost be worth a sign just to cut as soon as the season started.

I agree though, I simmed a ton of games with him, and he rarely gave me an ERA less than 4.75, and in most cases it was closer to 5. 200IP isn't worth it on a competing team when they aren't good innings. (ie: Bronson Arroyo and his 45HR Against).

Okay, I can admit defeat on the merits of Dempster, but I think the point about saving $1.1 M by cutting him later is well taken if the extra $900 K through FA could have been afforded.

Cut/sign is probably a real good argument ... but, if I know I won't want to use him and there is no way to move him in trade, for me, that 900K is pretty important for helping sign those little remaining pieces that I need and/or some 100K flyers on next season.
